The Curriculum in the Prep School is broad and balanced. We keep a close eye on the requirements of senior schools: while many children may wish to continue to Fulham Senior, we believe every child should find their own path, and all need to be equipped to face the eventual challenge of 11+ and 13+ so that they are well-placed for parents and children to be making the best possible choice for each individual.
Subjects covered include Art, Design Technology, English, French, Geography, History, ICT, Latin, Mathematics, Music, Philosophy, Physical Education, Religious Studies and Science.
From Year 4, the children start and end each day with their form tutors but move to different classrooms as each subject is specialist taught.
French is taught throughout the Prep School and Latin is introduced in Year 5 with most children taking the Latin paper at 13+. Greek is available as an option for children taking 13+.
Speech and Drama are taught as part of the English curriculum and most children attend at least one theatre performance a year.
During their time at Fulham Prep, children will have the opportunity to take part in football, cricket, rugby, netball and rounders as well as gymnastics, athletics, basketball, hockey, tennis and swimming. Fixtures in the major sports are played against other local schools with as many children as possible being given the opportunity to represent their school. There is an emphasis on team games to build a sense of service and belonging as well as opportunities to hone individual skills and a competitive nature. Karate, squash and fencing are offered as after-school clubs on a regular basis and some of the older children have a chance to try rowing, sailing, trampolining and climbing.
We are extremely lucky to be based in one of the cultural centres of the world and we try to take full advantage of this, taking children to theatres, museums, galleries and places of historical interest in and around London. From time to time, optional trips to suitable concerts are organised by the Music Department. In addition, from Year 4 every child in the school goes on one residential trip a year in which various aspects of the curriculum are covered according to the year group.
The Prep School holds traditional events throughout the year such as the Carol Service, Speech Day, Sports Day and various end of term productions. We also organise more unusual events and activities: Parents' Quiz Night, the Annual Curriculum Week and a Charity Fun Run. The children always enjoy the annual Staff vs Leavers match where they have a chance to pit their sporting skills against those of the teachers that trained them. Each year, the year 8 children select a charity to which money is raised throughout the year.
Independent work habits are encouraged throughout the school with realistic levels of homework set that is age-appropriate. There is an optional supervised homework club for Years 4-8 on Monday to Thursday afternoons between 4-5pm.
